Whidbey Island Beach Cabin

2000

Inspired by a Long Island vacation and Cape Cod style homes, this cabin on the edge of the sea was designed for two families to share on weekend escapes from Seattle. The street side faces a natural bird preserve and the water side looks out over the beach from three sets of double glass doors and three large windows.

Entering from the front door, the hall cuts the space in two, creating an art promenade that opens to the shared living spaces and coastal views. Beams and high ceilings allow a peek into the sleeping loft.

Either side of the entry hall hosts the bedrooms and bathrooms, featuring pocket doors and shared sinks to maximize space.

The driftwood berm on the beach side of the building could not be moved and an 18' height limit drove the shape of the exterior with a center ridge and shed dormers.
